Apple has announced that it has sold more than 1 billion iPhones. The announcement was made by its CEO Tim Cook during a meeting in their Cupertino headquarters.

“iPhone has become one of the most important, world-changing and successful products in history. It’s become more than a constant companion. iPhone is truly an essential part of our daily life and enables much of what we do throughout the day,” said Cook.

“Last week we passed another major milestone when we sold the billionth iPhone. We never set out to make the most, but we’ve always set out to make the best products that make a difference. Thank you to everyone at Apple for helping change the world every day,” he added.

When Apple posted their quarterly results yesterday, the company had sold about 988.15 million units, which means the company crossed the 1 billion mark after its earnings report was filed.

Despite iPhone sales being down by 15 percent for the third quarter of 2016, Tim Cook highlighted the huge success of the iPhone SE, which is currently the most affordable and compact iPhone that Apple sells. He said the iPhone SE was largely popular in the developing and emerging markets, and among first-time buyers.

Tim Cook also highlighted the Indian market, where iPhone sales have actually jumped by 50 percent, as compared to last year. Japan, Russia and Turkey also had strong sales in the third quarter. The company has also seen a large number of Android converts this year.

However, the decline in the sales are a spot of concern for Apple considering the newest iPhone variant, the iPhone 7, is expected to release in September. The larger iPhone 7 Plus is likely to have an upgraded dual-camera system, upgraded base storage, and also there is chatter about it coming without the 3.5mm jack which is used for connecting headphones. The smaller model of the phone is also expected to have an upgraded camera system.

As far as other milestones for Apple go, the company passed the 1-billion mark for the number of iOS devices sold in January 2015, and in January 2016, Apple announced it now has 1 billion active devices, including iPads, iPhones, Mac and iPod Touch, Apple TV and the Apple Watch.
